To the editor:

I know the important role that local grocery stores play in supporting our neighborhoods. Beyond simply providing food and household goods, these stores serve as flagships that bolster the local economy, create jobs, and foster a sense of belonging among residents.

A large reason I support the Kroger-Albertsons merger is to maintain community access to groceries. In many neighborhoods, especially those without large retail chains, these stores serve as lifelines for residents, offering not just food but also essential household items and a sense of community.

Additionally, the merged Kroger-Albertsons entity will have greater bargaining power with suppliers. This leverage can translate into expanded product offerings, providing customers with a more diverse selection of goods to choose from, including specialty and local products.

This merger would allow our local grocers to stay open, provide local jobs and offer lower prices. Kroger has also stated that they will not close stores and no employees will lose their jobs.

Both Kroger and Albertsons have a history of community involvement and philanthropy. The merger presents an opportunity to amplify these efforts, with a larger combined entity having the capacity to invest more significantly in local communities through charitable initiatives, sponsorships, and partnerships.

It is imperative that we prioritize the needs of residents who rely on these stores for their daily sustenance.

Ensuring continued access to affordable groceries should be a non-negotiable aspect of any agreement reached. I fully support this merger in the interest of community well-being.
