City budget hearing looms Thursday
Citizens have a chance to weigh in on Mount Airy’s proposed budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year during a public hearing Thursday. Coalson named city finance director
Mount Airy has a new finance director — although the word “new” doesn’t really apply, given Sherri Coalson’s familiarity with the work environment at City Hall. Coalson previously was employed there for 11 years, serving the municipality in various capacities, before recently returning as finance director. It doesn’t resemble a full-scale industrial area, lacking loud machinery, smokestacks or large truck traffic, but a section of Riverside Drive and East Pine Street is actually zoned for such use — which officials want to alter. City planners are recommending that 14 parcels with 12 different addresses along those and other streets in Mount Airy be rezoned from their present M-1 (industrial) classification to B-2 (General Business). Surry Early College Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Club recently attended the 2024 NC HOSA State Leadership Conference in Greensboro. Family influences dominate Mills Farm
The first in a series highlighting each of the six private gardens featured on this year’s Mount Airy Blooms Garden Tour scheduled for Saturday, June 8. Student presented Charlotte Yokley Award
A Mount Airy senior was recently honored with the 2024 Charlotte Weatherly Yokley Memorial Award. Ella Brant, daughter of Jayne and Tim Brant, received the award during the May 3 Mount Airy High School Honors Program. Ella is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity tennis team, and held several elected offices during her high school career. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. Presenting the award was Luke Graham and Charlotte’s mother, Pam Yokley.
