Hannibal City Council votes to remove traffic signals near former Eugene Field School
HANNIBAL — If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, but if it is no longer needed in its current form, put it to good use in other ways. The city of Hannibal is taking that approach with the traffic signals on Market Street at the old Eugene Field School crosswalk. At Tuesday night’s meeting, the city council approved the removal of the traffic signals.

Letter to the Editor — Quincy Park Board president responds to speed bump issue at Moorman Park
This email is in response to a previous Letter to the Editor, dated 28 April 2026, from local resident Patrick Poepping. Mr. Poepping raised his concern regarding speed control devices, such as “speed bumps” during a Park District Board meeting some time ago, and we spoke at length via telephone about the issue. It’s my impression that he is an intelligent, civic-minded individual, who clearly possesses a breadth of experience about those topics about which he is passionate.

Letter to the Editor — Speed bumps in Moorman Park
On August 17, 2025, I submitted a Letter to the Editor to Muddy River News titled “Quincy Park District — Speed Bumps at Moorman Park.”. That letter generated many positive responses supporting my position that the speed bumps in Moorman Park should be removed or significantly modified. One response came from the President of the Quincy Park District, Mark Philpot, who indicated the matter would be referred to the District’s maintenance staff. At the time, I was skeptical of sending the issue back to the very group responsible for installing these problematic devices—much like “having the fox guard the hen house.” Still, I remained hopeful.

Letter to the Editor: Supporting Prop. 61
My name is Terry Sampson, and I’m a lifelong resident of Hannibal. Many changes have taken place during those years, especially along the Highway 61 corridor through town. My point in writing this letter is to show my total commitment/support for the Hannibal Expressway/ Bypass. I totally understand the issues associated with this project, but I strongly feel the bottom line of safety and fluidity of travel outweighs the opposing concerns. Like Kirksville and Maryville bypasses in Missouri, Hannibal is a destination community and the people wanting to come here will do so. I have always been involved with the Hannibal schools and from a personal standpoint my children work there, and my grandchildren are students. I worry frequently about the school traffic and the number of trucks, hazardous material and other related traffic counts bring.
