Varsity basketball season is over at Orrick in one way — and it continues in another. Orrick’s varsity girls basketball season ended Monday with a 38-30 loss to Norborne in Class 1 District 13 Tournament play at Norborne. The Bearcats trailed the Pirates 11-4 after one quarter, 17-11 at halftime and 26-15 after three. Orrick outscored Norborne 15-12 the final quarter. The Orrick girls finished 3-22 — their first season under coach Jonathan Kinder. After a 3-3 start, they lost their last 19 games, including one by forfeit, Missouri State High School Activities Association records state. At press time, Orrick’s varsity boys season was set to continue. The boys opened District 13 play Tuesday, also at Norborne, by cruising past Southwest of Livingston County 69-43. The Kearney High School Girls Wrestling team, also known as the Bulldogs, secured their second consecutive State Championship title at the Girls Wrestling State Tournament in Columbia. Despite having only four wrestlers, the team won by a 1-point margin over Brookfield. Amanda Hopkins, a special education teacher at Kearney School District (KSD), Missouri, will become an Assistant Principal at Kearney High School (KHS) for the 2024-2025 academic year. Hopkins has been with KSD for three years and has 13 years of experience teaching first graders. She has also served as a Summer School Administrative Intern since 2016. She will replace the retiring Assistant Principal Sandy Henshaw.
