Logging and the Siletz Tribe: From Survival to Stewardship
Historic photo of the Siletz Tribe’s mill site in Toledo, Oregon. File photo from tribal albums. Logging has played an important role in the history of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. Timber was more than just a natural resource. Over time, it became a source of employment, income, housing, community development, and tribal self-sufficiency. At the same time, the logging industry brought environmental changes and was connected to a larger history of land loss and outside control. Understanding the history of logging helps explain how our Tribe has changed and how forestry continues to be an important part of our future.

Eugene man sets personal record as 2,307-pound pumpkin wins Washington weigh-off top prize
EUGENE, Ore. — A Eugene man has a larger than life hobby growing giant pumpkins. We visited Russ Pugh's property to see just how heavy the fruit of his labor was this year. "You know, I've been doing this competitively for 25 years," Pugh says, "and when, I think I was eight years old, I grew up in Kansas and I went to the Kansas State Fair and I saw what I thought was the world's biggest pumpkin. Now looking back at it, it probably weighed maybe 300 pounds. But ever since then, I've wanted to grow a giant pumpkin."

Georgia-Pacific to temporarily close Olalla Reservoir as water levels decline
Georgia-Pacific will temporarily close Olalla Reservoir to public access beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6, because declining water levels have exposed steep shoreline slopes that may pose safety risks to visitors. The entrance to the company-owned reservoir northeast of Toledo will be secured, and closure signs will be posted. Georgia-Pacific security contractors will monitor the property during the closure. For everyone’s safety, members of the public are not allowed to enter the site while the closure is in effect. Unauthorized entry is considered trespassing and may be reported to law enforcement. Georgia-Pacific will continue to assess site conditions and will reopen the reservoir to public access when the company determines it is appropriate to do so. Olalla Reservoir supplies water for operations at Georgia-Pacific’s Toledo mill. The company also permits daytime public recreation at the site when conditions allow. When the reservoir is open, visitors must follow all posted rules, including prohibitions on hunting, littering and gas- powered boat motors.

‘An anchor’: Oakshire fans celebrate, grieve as business prepares to shut down
For Geovanna Rodriguez, Oakshire Public House was where she and her husband met their closest Eugene friends not long after moving to the city. For Pam and Bob Hess, it was a place to safely socialize and hear live music during the COVID-19 pandemic, just a 10-minute walk from their house (five if you walk fast, Bob said).
