(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 79-year-old Missouri man has been charged with a murder that occurred 58-years-ago in Calumet City.

It was November 12, 1966 when 18-year-old Karen Snider was found dead in her home by her husband, Paul, when he returned home from work at about 11 p.m.

Snider was a new mother who had recently given birth.

There had been a forced entry to the home and she’d been stabbed more than 120 times.

    Snider was found fully clothed.

James Barbier was questioned, he was an acquaintance of the Sniders. He had gone to a hospital that night for a severe cut on his hand.

However, nothing came of the investigation until detectives took another look.

Chief Kevin Kolosh says they spent 16 months analyzing evidence and locating and re-interviewing surviving witnesses.

The investigation led back to Barbier, the family acquaintance. DNA is part of the evidence.

He was tracked down in Missouri and was brought back to face charges of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors did not seek to keep him locked up, because of his age and health.
