New EPA rules will rein in San Miguel’s lignite pollution
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated four federal rules on April 25 that will impact San Miguel Electric Cooperative, located near McMullen County, by requiring a reduction in mercury emissions, improved coal ash disposal methods and compliance with new wastewater discharge standards. “According to 2023 EPA data, San Miguel is the fourth largest mercury polluter of all power plants in Texas and one of the top (polluters) in the United States. It will have to improve its rate of mercury pollution reduction by approximately 92 percent,” according to a press release by the Sierra Club.
