Economic Shot In The Arm For Eastern Sierra Region
Sonora, CA — A multi-million-dollar economic boost is on its way to the Eastern Sierra region, which includes four Mother Lode counties. The newly-formed Sierra Jobs First initiative is part of a statewide California Jobs First investment in job creation, industrial strategy, and economic development initiatives to create a more climate-resilient and equitable economy. The initiative spans seven counties: Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Inyo, Mariposa, Mono, and Tuolumne.
International Frog Jump Top Finishers
Angels Camp, CA — The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee wrapped on Sunday after seeing beautiful weather throughout the weekend and a strong crowd on hand. The top jump in the International Frog Jump on the main stage was Lilian Fasano’s frog, The Frog Father, with a leap of 20 feet and 5.5 inches. Fasano, in her eighties, is a long-time participant who is one of the founders of the Gustine Frog Team which was started back in the 1950s.
Pair Of Weekend Fires
Angels Camp, CA — There were a couple of fires of note in the region as temperatures are rising this season. There was a 20 by 20 ft. vegetation fire near the south entrance of the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp on Sunday afternoon shortly before one o’clock. The forward progress was quickly stopped. The cause was not immediately released.
West Point resident crowned Miss Calaveras
A new Miss Calaveras was crowned on Thursday, May 16 during the opening day of the Calaveras County Fair. While the seven contestants and a large crowd of spectators waited in suspense to hear who would win that crown, a surprised and excited West Point resident, Arabelle Jones, had her name called by co-master of ceremonies and Angels Camp Vice Mayor Isabel Moncada. Serving as the pageant’s other co-master of ceremonies was Calaveras County Supervisor Martin Huberty.
Update: Thousands Lost Power In Calaveras County
