Storm Damage And Tree Work To Impact Two Calaveras County Roadways
Calaveras County, CA – Two road projects this week in Calaveras County — one lasting a day and the other through July. Work began this week on the construction of the final 2019 Winter Storm Recovery Project: Railroad Flat Road Intersection Realignment. Monica Darlene Heller
Monica Darlene Heller passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, with her family by her side at the age of 88. She was born in Stockton, California, on Oct. 30, 1934. Darlene graduated from Calaveras High School in 1952 and enrolled in Holy Names College in Oakland, California. Following her graduation in 1957 she began her teaching career in Stockton where she taught for a total of seven-anda half years. Upon returning to Calaveras County, she spent five years at San Andreas Elementary and 28 years at Mark Twain Elementary. Darlene loved teaching and helping children learn. She always remembered everyone she taught and their names. She always expressed how much she loved and cared for all of her students, and shared stories of them all the way till the end of her life.
Sheriff, police chief, DA discuss county issues
Calaveras County Sheriff Rick DiBasilio, Angels Camp Police Chief Scott Ellis, and Calaveras County District Attorney Barbara Yook spoke at an event on Wednesday, May 31, at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp. The event was organized by the Calaveras County Republican Central Committee. Nearly every seat in the Fireside Room was filled by community members, some of whom live inside the Greenhorn Creek subdivision, according to the hands that were raised when asked.
Opera diva to perform once-in-a-lifetime concert in Angels Camp
Karis Tucker, an acclaimed 30-year-old diva who has graced some of the finest opera house stages around the world, is headed to Calaveras County. Fresh off of the stages of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Staatsballett Berlin, Tucker will give Calaveras County residents a chance to see a world-class opera concert at the Dr. Elliott A. Smart Performing Arts Center in Angels camp on Friday, June 16.
Update: Power Outage Impacting 1,500 In Mother Lode
Update at 5:40 p.m.: PG&E reports that all the power has been restored to customers in Tuolumne County and all but 23 in Calaveras. Those customers are along Highway 4 between Cottage Springs and Ganns. The utility gives a restoration time of 11:15 p.m. Further details on those outages are below.
Deputies arrest motorcyclist after chase through San Joaquin, Calaveras Counties
STOCKTON, Calif. — A 53-mile-long police chase through San Joaquin and Calaveras Counties ended with an arrest Friday afternoon. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, Shawn Melcher, 46, of Farmington, did not stop his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle when deputies tried to pull him over in east Stockton.
Update:Structure Fire In Valley Springs
Update at 8:15 a.m.: CAL Fire reports that firefighters have knocked down a house fire in the Valley Springs area of Calaveras County. The fire broke out around 7 a.m. They added that the flames were contained to the home located in the 500 block of Highway 12 and Lime Creek Road, despite the house being fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived. No one was inside the home when the blaze broke out, and what sparked it is under investigation. A small crew will remain on the scene, mopping up for several hours.

Fatal Crash In Mountain Ranch
Mountain Ranch, CA — One person has died after a morning crash in the Mountain Ranch area of Calaveras County. The CHP remains on the scene, with officers surveying the area to determine exactly what happened. The collision happened around 6:45 a.m. on the 6200 block of Quartz Mine Road, between Swiss Ranch Road and Banner Road. The CHP reports that an SUV smashed into a tree, causing major damage to the front end of the vehicle. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Has Your Pet Had Its Rabies Shots?
Sonora, CA – Two Mother Lode counties are holding rabies vaccination clinics, and one is also offering microchips for pets. Both welcome dogs and cats. In Tuolumne County, animal control will be holding a rabies vaccination clinic this Saturday, June 3, at its shelter located at 10040 Victoria Way in Jamestown, behind C & C Mini Mart. The cost is $10, and they only take cash or checks. Owners are also asked to bring their renewal forms for each pet to speed up the process.
Honoring 40 years of aviation and community dedication
I’ll never forget first meeting Kathy Zancanella in the late ’80s when she served as president of the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and manager of the Calaveras County Airport, Maury Rasmussen Field. Her drive, her spirit and her friendliness were what inspired me to join the Chamber Board shortly thereafter and spend years on many nonprofit boards, including the Economic Development Co., of which she was also president. I saw in her a compassionate leadership that really brought people together for the common good. She smiled at you straight into your eyes.
Update: Fire In Calaveras County
Update at 2:15 p.m.: Fire crews have stopped the forward rate of the Basket Fire burning in the Copperopolis area of Calaveras County, according to CAL Fire spokesperson Emily Kilgore. She updates that the fire’s size was estimated at a half acre and that it ignited in the grass. There is no word on what sparked the fire. Kilgore added that a small crew will remain on scene, working towards full containment and mopping up for the next couple of hours.
Tree Work Will Close Arnold Road
Arnold, CA – Motorists in the Arnold area may have to take a detour as a roadway will be closed Friday. Calaveras County Public Works crews will be doing tree work at 2386 Murphys Drive, between Moran Road and Douglas Drive, south of Highway 4 in the Fly-In-Acres subdivision. It will begin at 7 a.m. and run until 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2.
