The Burlington Farmers Market summer season kicks off this weekend, May 11, at its usual location 345 Pine St. However, construction along Pine Street may make the commute more difficult than just the usual traffic.
The work being done is part of the Champlain Parkway Project. It includes the construction of a new roadway from the existing I-189 near its intersection with U.S. 7 to Lakeside Avenue and upgrades to Lakeside Avenue and the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street. A variety of improvements are taking place, from new paving, traffic signage, roadway water drainage and new accommodations for pedestrians.
With no clear date on the completion of the work, those who plan to visit the market should be aware of the construction. Pine Street operates in both directions on the weekends, but bumpy roads with debris will slow down traffic. Those walking to and from the market should also be aware of potential construction equipment on the streets, sidewalks and parking lots that may cause interference.
Market Director Georgie Rubens said it shouldn't have a major impact on the market, as actual construction is happening only on the weekdays. She said maybe some parking will be lost due to equipment and debris in certain lots, but she hopes it doesn't deter visitors. Information about parking can be found on the market's website.
The construction isn't getting Rubens down, who spoke with a vigor about the "exciting" 44th season. She's boasting over a dozen new vendors, along with some "old favorites" returning.
"We hope people can make it out and kick-off this exciting season," Rubens said. "After last summer's rain, we're hoping for a drier year. We're ready to bring forth some new life."
