(KRON) — A San Mateo County jury will begin deliberating on Wednesday to decide the fate of Omeed Sean Adibi.

Adibi was 18-years-old when he, according to prosecutors, intentionally drove his Mercedes SUV onto a sidewalk and accelerated directly toward five boys in Burlingame on February 29, 2020.

The San Mateo man erroneously believed that the group of boys, who were between ages 12-13, had previously vandalized his vehicle, prosecutors said.

Four of the boys were struck by the Mercedes on the sidewalk of Howard Avenue, including one boy who suffered a major spinal injury, and another who suffered a traumatic brain injury.

After striking the boys, the Mercedes crashed into a fire hydrant. “The defendant drove away from the scene dragging the fire hydrant behind him. The defendant stopped (on) Burlingame Avenue to remove the hydrant and citizens kept him there until police arrived,” the District Attorney’s Office wrote.

Prosecutors charged Adibi with five counts of attempted murder, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and hit-and-run.

The driver, now 23, has already served four years in jail awaiting trial. His bail is set at $25 million.

In April, Judge Elizabeth Hill presided over a 23-day jury trial where prosecutors presented evidence against Adibi. On Wednesday, attorneys will deliver closing arguments and jury deliberations will begin, the DA’s Office said.
