Missouri hunters harvest record 36 black bears in season

Missouri hunters harvested a record 36 black bears during the state's sixth black bear hunting season, which ran Oct. 17-30. The Missouri Department of Conservation reported the harvest results, according to a community announcement. The 36 bears were taken from a maximum allowable harvest of 60. More than 5,200 hunters applied in May for 2,000 permits. Of the 2,000 hunters selected through a random drawing, nearly 1,490 purchased permits for the season. Black bear hunting in Missouri is limited to state residents and three designated areas of southern Missouri known as Bear Management Zones. Each permit applies to a specific zone, and hunting is allowed on public or private property within that zone. Bear harvest varies by management zone Hunters harvested 29 bears in Bear Management Zone 1, one short of the zone's maximum allowable harvest of 30. Seven bears were harvested in Bear Management Zone 2, which had a maximum of 22. No bears were harvested in Bear Management Zone 3, where the maximum was eight. Of the 36 bears harvested, 34 were taken with firearms and two with archery equipment. The harvest included 23 males and 13 females. “We had another successful black bear hunting season this year,”
