KITTITAS CO., Wash. -- The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said one citizen was commended for helping a deputy during an arrest.

Steven Pearson, of Buckley was presented a Citizen Commendation by Sheriff Myers on Tuesday, April 30.

According to KCSO, Pearson was at a Shell gas station in Easton on March 3 when KCSO Deputy Jacob Crandall was attempting to arrest a 28-year-old Seattle man who was driving a stolen vehicle.

KCSO said the suspect tried to run from the gas station and Deputy Crandall began running after him, fracturing his knee. Despite the fractured knee, Deputy Crandall continued to chase the man just as the suspect tried to steal a different vehicle.

According to officials, Deputy Crandall was trying to arrest the man and Pearson saw the struggle between the deputy and suspect. Pearson ran to assist the deputy and asked how he could help; Pearson assisted in holding the suspect so he could be handcuffed.

KCSO said the suspect plead guilty to possessing a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.

Fortunately, KCSO said Deputy Crandall fully recovered from his injury and is back at work.

Sheriff Myers shared his appreciation for the way people like Mr. Pearson step up in time of need. He reflected that Kittitas County has consistently supported and stood behind its law enforcement agencies, with positive impact on public safety. “Effective crime fighting is always a partnership between a community’s civilians and its law enforcement professionals. In this incident, Mr. Pearson embodied that partnership in the most literal way.”
