Blue Jays oust Pirates in sectional baseball
DELPHOS — The St. John’s baseball crew used a 4-run third inning to propel the Blue Jays by Continental 8-3 in Division IV sectional play on a wet Tuesday at Stadium Park. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third frame, the Jays (13-12) rallied in the home half against Pirate (1-15) starter Sam Newsome. Tyler Lindeman led off with a walk and advanced on consecutive wild pitches. Tyce McClain walked and stole second. Braylen Metzger then plated Lindeman on his sacrifice fly to left to tie the game at 1.
Elwer and Metzger earn All-MAC first team selections
MAC — The Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) unveiled its 2024 all-conference baseball selections on Thursday evening. Senior Braylon Metzger and sophomore Cameron Elwer, both influential figures on the Blue Jays’ squad, earned well-deserved spots on the All-MAC first team. Adding to St. John’s accolades, senior Austin Moenter and junior TJ Werts received honorable mentions.
Musketeers succumb to Patrick Henry in sectional finals
HAMLER — Patrick Henry used strong pitching and timely hits to eliminate Fort Jennings 5-1 Thursday in Division IV sectional final action at Garrold Parratt Field in Hamler. The Musketeers had a chance in the top of the first inning, getting the first two (Calvin Menke and Owen Calvelage) on via errors and sending them up on a come-backer by Bryce Gasser. However, a fly ball from Jarron Swick and throw home doubled up Menke trying to score.
Allen East advances in tournament with 2-1 sections win
COLUMBUS GROVE — Allen East took advantage of a throwing error Wednesday to defeat Columbus Grove 2-1 in a Division III sectional semi-final. The win sends the Mustangs (11-12) to a Division III sectional final contest Friday at Eastwood at 5 p.m.
