While officers were investigating the open door, the homeowner shot at the officers on his property, striking one of them in the chest, police said.

The officer was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, which police cited to the use of protective equipment. Police added that the officer is recovering and in good spirits.

ValleyCentral was at the scene of the shooting Wednesday night, where we obtained exclusive footage of what may be the vest that saved the officer.

The homeowner was questioned following the incident, but police did not say whether he would be facing charges as the case remains under investigation.

In an update, Brownsville police said the officer was released from the hospital Thursday morning.
