PAULDING, Ohio — Frances Jeraldean Smith, 68, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, in Paulding, Ohio, at her sister’s residence. She was born on Dec. 13, 1955, in Van Wert, Ohio, the daughter of the late Max Smith and Annis Pearl (McHugh) Smith.

Defiance County grand jury returns indictments against 14 defendants
A Defiance County grand jury has returned indictments against 14 persons, according to Prosecutor Morris Murray’s office. Indicted were: • Manuel Canales, 24, Stryker (CCNO), for three counts of rape, each a first-degree felony. Paulding Exempted Village Schools recognized and honored six retiring employees at their annual Staff Appreciation Breakfast on May 10, 2024. Five of the retirees received a personalized crock handmade by Sandy Dobbelaere to commemorate their time at PEVS, and Superintendent Ken Amstutz received a shadow box made by John Kennedy, PEVS Industrial Arts Teacher.
ODOT plans new roundabouts in intersection safety package
Three new roundabouts in Wood County plus others in Henry, Fulton, and Defiance counties are part of an $86.9 million package of safety-oriented projects the Ohio Department of Transportation announced statewide. The projects that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks announced Thursday also include “intersection improvements” at Alexis Road and North Detroit Avenue in North Toledo. All but a handful of the 28 projects in 22 counties are at intersections, and 19 projects involve building single-lane roundabouts at mostly rural locations where ODOT said crashes are frequent, although the announcement did not include crash data. “When it comes to our roadways, safety will always be our top priority,” Gov. DeWine said. “Our goal is to save lives by investing to improve dangerous intersections.”

Antwerp School Board Wrap Up School Year with New HS Principal at Board Meeting
The Antwerp School Board Meeting started at 5:30 p.m. on May 16, 2024. President Sara Schuette opened the meeting with approving the previous board minutes. Bob Herber stated that Governor DeWine signed a new bill that would allow the schools to have a cell phone policy. Cell phone use could get out of control. If a problem arises, the school can limit, now using state law. Marty Miller stated that Antwerp hasn’t had a huge problem with cell phone use.

Paulding Eagles Donate Toward Veterans Memorial Project
Paulding Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2405 makes a $10,000 donation to the Paulding Veterans Memorial project. Mike Kauser, a trustee of the Paulding Fraternal Order of Eagles, was instrumental in the creation of the Paulding Veterans Memorial project and coordinating the Eagle’s donations to the memorial.
Local Memorial Day services
VAN WERT — The American Legion will be holding its Memorial Day service at Woodland Cemetery on May 27 at 11 a.m. with honors by a combined Color Guard, a cannon volley, and 21-gun salute. Keynote speaker will be Stephanie Renner. A wreath laying will also take place. Soup and sandwiches will follow at the Legion for those in attendance.
Jones waives right to speedy trial
VAN WERT—A Defiance woman was back in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday (May 22) on several felony charges. Summer R. Jones, 34, is charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, both first degree felonies; three counts of Felonious Assault, both second degree felonies; two counts of Aggravated Assault, both fourth degree felonies; and one count of Domestic Violence, a first degree misdemeanor.
Napoleon advances to baseball regionals with victory over Defiance
ARCHBOLD, Ohio — Napoleon defeated Defiance 13-3 on Saturday, winning a Division II district baseball title for the first time since 2011. The No. 2 seed Wildcats (20-9) beat the top-seeded Bulldogs (20-6) at Memorial Park. Napoleon advances to play Huron in a regional semifinal at Bowling Green's Carter Park at 2 p.m. Thursday. Napoleon senior Lucas Gerken went 3-for-4 on Saturday with a home run and five RBIs. Junior Parker Woods had three RBIs, senior Blaine Ford went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, and senior Devin Dietrich was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs, one RBI, and one steal. Senior pitcher Jacob Shadle got the victory, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out three.
Defiance common pleas
Troy Braatz, 23, Toledo, appeared for sentencing on charges of attempted engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, a fifth-degree felony; and theft, a first-degree misdemeanor, according to Defiance County Prosecutor Morris Murray’s office. He was given a 41-month prison term with credit for four days served in jail while his case was pending and ordered to pay $3,112.90 restitution to the victims. Braatz and a co-defendant stole merchandise from two businesses on Defiance’s North Clinton Street on Sept. 25. The felony charge was amended from engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, a second-degree felony. ...
