Brooklyn Restaurant's 'Adults Only' Policy Has People Divided

Sometimes, people just want a calm, quiet place to enjoy dinner without a lot of noise and away from screaming children. Even if you are a parent, you may want one night where you can be with adults only.

Well, one Brooklyn restaurant is making that a reality for diners. Bar Louise is for adults only.

If you’re heading to this new restaurant in Brooklyn, leave your kids at home – it's become a spot for adults only. But as FOX 5 NY's Michelle Ross shows, the owner just wanted to give parents a place to escape. #nyc #brooklyn #dining #restaurant #adultsonly #foodie #nightlife #happyhours

    It's Not an Official Policy

The new restaurant is located in Park Slope, which is a family-oriented neighborhood. It recently gained a lot of attention, though, for being adults-only.

"I wouldn’t say that kids are not allowed here, but I think that the community has kinda realized that they don’t want to bring their kids here," owner Allison Arevalo told Fox 5 New York.

Arevalo is a mother herself. She also owns Pasta Louise, an Italian restaurant nearby. It is a kid-friendly spot.

"Pasta Louise is probably the most kid-friendly restaurant in all of New York City," Louise said. "If you come by on a Saturday, it is like stroller parking everywhere."

But sometimes, you just need a date night that doesn't involve hearing tantrums over chicken nuggets or sippy cups.

"There really isn’t a place for date nights for when parents do want to leave the kids behind and when teachers want to come out and don't want to worry about running into their students," Arevalo said.

And teachers really seem to love it, especially because happy hour starts at 3:30 p.m. to accommodate their busy schedules.

In fact, that was by careful design. According to a customer, Arevalo sent out a survey for teachers to fill out asking where they would like to see discounts (on food or drinks) and to determine what times work best for them.

Teachers get 10% off their bill and a punch-card reward system for drinks.

The bar also raises about $15,000 a year in scholarships for Brooklyn students who lost a parent to cancer, in honor of Alison’s sister, who died of bladder cancer and left behind two children.

But even with all of this love, support, and acceptance of children, some people aren't pleased about the policy.

    You Can't Please Everyone

While the vast majority of the comments were from people who love the idea, and most of those were from parents, some people said that children should be allowed to go anywhere an adult goes.

To clarify, there is no official policy about not bringing kids in, but we can't imagine that a bar atmosphere full of adults is a fun place for kids. Plus, there are many places that kids can't go, like a bar.

We think it's great to have options. As one commenter said "there are kid-friendly restaurants, and there are restaurants for date nights." We love that there are more options for child-free dining!
