BRODHEAD, Wis. – Coming off an 8-6 victory over rival Beloit Turner on Monday, Clinton’s Cougars put undefeated Brodhead in their sights on Tuesday.

Cardinals ace Ava Risum had other ideas, however.

Risum struck out 15 and allowed only five hits in 6 2-3 innings as Brodhead improved to 11-0 by edging Clinton 3-1. After Risum was struck by a line drive in the right forearm, Sophia Leitzen came on to get the final out.

Leah Rear led off the Brodhead second inning with a double and Allie Dahl reached on an error on her bunt, allowing Rear to score. Jerrica Schwartz moved Dahl to second with a sacrifice bunt. She stole third and a strikeout later scored on Keegan Steinke’s groundout.

The Cardinals made it 3-0 in the third on a solo home run by Leitzen. That was all Brodhead could manage off Ashley Theisen, who pitched six innings and allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

Clinton (5-6) scored an unearned run in the seventh inning. With two outs, Grace Wilson singled off Risum and Leitzen came on in relief. Emily Hubka reached on an error and Wilson took third. She scored on a passed ball before Leitzen got the final out.

    • TURNER 12, EVANSVILLE 5: Kamdyn Davis went a perfect 5-for-5 to lead the Trojans’ hitting brigade as they racked up 20 hits to down the Blue Devils in Rock Valley Conference Rock action on Tuesday.
