Texas-style BBQ, Indonesian soul: Fikscue is making it easier to get your fix

The brisket Fikscue serves in Alameda on Saturday starts cooking Friday morning — across the Bay in San Francisco. Around 6 a.m. the day before service, co-owner and pitmaster Fik Saleh starts the cook at Fikscue’s second location at Thrive City, outside Chase Center. It can run until 9 or 10 p.m. The finished briskets then spend the night resting hot in a warmer.

Fifty years after it first opened in 1976, Nabolom Bakery shut its doors to the public on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026. Established in the Elmwood district in Berkeley, CA, the business prided itself on its “one of a kind pizza, fresh baked goods, beer, wine, and drip coffee,” and was well known for its high-quality ingredients and staple cinnamon twists. Prior to its closure, the business shortened it’s hours and fought to maintain a steady clientele, but ultimately struggled to maintain operations due to economic stress.
