Remember Hopp's? Waupun's famous pizza and Dutch windmill
WAUPUN – A common sentiment in Waupun's dining scene is that the city has been lucky with pizza restaurants. Martha and Jim Hopp opened Hopp's Restaurant on Fond du Lac Street in 1965, quickly finding the means in 1969 to move to its longtime West Main Street location, where Main Street Bistro & Bakery stands today. Read more: Remember when Fond du Lac's Ghosts of Galloway brought genuine frights? The Hopps ran the business as a mom-and-pop restaurant with a full menu of homemade favorites and a welcoming space to enjoy a cup of coffee, according to The Reporter archives. The atmosphere and the soup and pie specials helped many local seniors liken it to Fond du Lac's gathering spot Schreiner's on Interstate 41. Weekday breakfast service was often frequented by retirees who got together to solve the world's problems over bottomless coffee and doughnuts. By the 1990s, waitresses started referring to them as "The Board." The most popular menu item, however, was the pizza, made from scratch with a secret recipe. Beer ‘Pocket Pancakes’ celebrates a winning Brewers season
A big beer befits a big season: G5’s Pocket Pancakes. Looking for a big beer to celebrate Brewers’ mania? G5 Brewing in Beloit rolled out the barrel —literally — in honor of Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy with the release of Pocket Pancakes ($23/16-oz bottle). The name calls attention to Murphy’s penchant for pulling out a cold hotel pancake from the pocket of his hoodie when he needs a snack during the game. This beer is a big 15% ABV breakfast stout aged in barrels for 44 months — more than two years in Wild Turkey bourbon barrels, followed by a year-and-half in maple syrup barrels. The brewery offered a limited release of the beer last fall, but when the Brewers made it to the World Series, G5 Brewmaster Tim Goers decided it was time for another run. This year’s version has had an extra year of barrel aging, making it more robust and sweet, just like the Brewers’ season.
