BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Bridgeport Public Library is growing a new type of knowledge within the community by offering its seed library for a second year .

The seed library, located in the front lobby of the library, offers free vegetable, fruit and flower seeds to the community. Each family can take up to five packets of seeds per visit. Seed packets must be checked out at the front desk by filling out the Seed Library Log.

Adult Services Coordinator Angela Spatafore told 12 News that the library decided to start the seed library when it set up the community garden on the property.

“So, we also have a garden and we wanted something else to kind of go along with that, and so we came up with the seed library. It’s important to us because we want people to have like their own independence to grow their own food if they choose, and we have books and resources available to help them along the way,” Spatafore said.

While you do not need to donate seeds to use the seed library, the Bridgeport Public Library is asking for donations of flower and herb seeds specifically. Non-GMO, preferably organic seed donations are accepted at the front desk.
