BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Bridgeport doctor was found guilty by a jury Thursday of writing some of his patients Adderall prescriptions without a legitimate medical purpose.

David Elwood Hess, 60, was found guilty on four counts of improper prescribing and one count of destroying records. The jury also found Hess remotely wiped his iPhone after law enforcement seized it, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

“Dr. Hess was reckless in his prescribing and put himself and his sexual desire ahead of the wellbeing of his patients,” United States Attorney William Ihlenfeld said in a press release. “His sexual misconduct corrupted his decision-making and put his patients at great risk. Thanks to the jury’s verdict and the excellent work of investigators and prosecutors, Dr. Hess will be held accountable for his crimes.”

At the time of his indictment last April , the West Virginia Board of Medicine showed Hess practiced at 215 W. Main St. in Bridgeport and that his medical license and controlled substance dispensing license had been surrendered.

Once a presentencing investigation has been completed, Hess will be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Kleeh.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, Hess is not showing up on the West Virginia Department of Corrections’ website.
