The Maine attorney general’s office on Wednesday released the name of the man fatally shot by the Brewer police chief last week.

Brewer Police Chief Jason Moffit shot Barry Chick Jr., 39, around 10:40 a.m. Thursday on Green Point Road near the city’s public works building, said Danna Hayes, a spokesperson for the AG’s office.

Chick allegedly tried to rob the Brewer Walmart and escaped from staff who tried to detain him. He fled through the woods, leading to a police chase, Brewer police said.

Moffit found Chick and “issued commands,” to him, which he did not follow, Brewer police said. Chick appeared to reach for a weapon, and Moffit shot and killed him, police said.

There is no video footage of the moment of the shooting, Jonathan Bolton, public access officer for the AG’s office, said previously.

Moffit is on administrative leave while the office of the attorney general investigates the shooting, as it does with all fatal shootings by police in Maine.
