Northland's closing process stretches into second year with campus still awaiting buyer
John Manno of Ashland wheeled a cart loaded with six shopping bags filled with library books out of the now-closed Dexter Library on the Northland College campus. Manno was participating in the last of the library’s book sales, aimed at finding new homes for the library’s thousands of remaining books. Thousands have already been sold at $1 a book, and the May 1 event was the final of three sales that saw hundreds of other books and magazines given away free. Manno was taking as much advantage of the bargains as he could, buying some 62 volumes. Most of the books he purchased were classics of literature, mostly from before World War I. “I’ve bought over a hundred, easily,” he said. “They are bargains, but it’s bittersweet. It’s kind of the way of the world. It’s too bad, but this is the way things go.” According to former Library Services Coordinator Elizabeth Madsen-Genszler, who served in her post for more than 15 years, large parts of the library collection have been donated to other colleges and educational facilities. “We are trying to find new homes for all of these books, places where they can be used,” she said.
