Red Sox walk-off Rays 5-4 to even the series

The Boston Red Sox entered Tuesday night with a chance to even the series against the Tampa Bay Rays at one game apiece, and they did just that in walk-off fashion, winning 5-4 in the 12th inning.

Boston's arms were solid, allowing just three earned runs over 12 innings. Nick Pivetta bounced back with a solid start, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing just two earned runs (both solo home runs) on four hits.

The Red Sox were on top when he left the game due to a two-RBI double by Dom Smith and a solo shot to left by Ceddanne Rafaela.

Boston turned it over to the bullpen, and Justin Slaten, who has been arguably the team's best reliever, gave up back-to-back hits allowing the final earned run of the game to score.

Extra innings got dangerous for the Red Sox, as Romy Gonzalez got doubled-off as a ghost runner on second in the 10th and a Rafaela error in the top of the 11th allowed Tampa Bay to take a 4-3 lead.

Luckily, in the bottom of the frame, Rob Refsnyder grounded out to the pitcher, but there was no one covering second base for a double play, allowing the tying run to score.

Gonzalez made up for his out earlier in extra innings by driving in the game-winning run on a single to right field.

Boston's offense is still scuffling despite scoring five runs, as no player in their lineup had multiple hits, and they struck out 14 times.

With two games left in this series, the Red Sox have a 1.5-game lead over the Rays, and if they can take these last two, they'll put themselves in a better position for when the two teams meet again next week.
