BLUEWELL, WV (WVNS) – In Spring of 2023, Governor Jim Justice and the Timberland Elementary School Building Committee, held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of construction on a new school in Mercer county.

The ceremony was right on top of where the school would be built. What was once a dirt pile now has walls and cement being laid out as construction runs smoothly.

Dr. Sarah Grose, who is not only the Principal of Bluewell Elementary, but a prime member of the building committee, said progress is right on schedule.

“We are on track for opening in August of 2025. I believe that the building will be finished by March or April, I think it’s set for April of 2025,” said Grose.

The creation of the new school is to combine the current Bluewell and Brushfork Elementary Schools under one roof. Both current buildings are older and are due for an upgrade.

Dr. Grose said one thing she is excited about is the separation between cafeteria and gym. The kids have their hands in the process as well!

From mascots to team names, the students at both locations have all been part of the process.

The kids are a big part of deciding those details. So, you know it gives them ownership, it makes them more excited,” said Grose.

The planning team consists of over 60 members. The members range from administrators, architects, teachers and more. The number of students estimated to be attending the school is over 300.
