An man serving a 22 year prison sentence for attempted murder escaped Tuesday from a work detail in Burlington County and remains on the run, according to police. Edward Berbon, 54, who was nearing the end of his mandatory minimum term, was assigned to a halfway house when he disappeared from a work detail in Mount Laurel, according to local police.

Police say Edward Berbon served 18 years of his sentence and was scheduled to be released in February.

UPDATE - WEDNESDAY MORNING: The New Jersey Department of Corrections continues to search for Edward Berbon. The Mount Laurel Police Department said in a press release,. We have no information that Mr. Berbon poses any threat to the public. Mr. Berbon does NOT reside in Mount Laurel, the Mount Laurel Police Department has not had any contact with Mr. Berbon since he has been working here, and we have no information to indicate that he is currently in Mount Laurel.

Laurel today (Tuesday). According to the Patch, "Edward Berbon had been in state custody since 2004. Assigned to a halfway house, Berbon was on a work detail in Mount Laurel during his escape, authorities said."

Burlington County has sent General Election vote-by-mail (VBM) ballots to voters who requested them. Over 47,000 VBM ballots, which is about 13% of the county's registered voters, were sent out. Registered voters can still request a VBM ballot from the Burlington County Clerk’s Office. After October 31, all applications for VBM must be made in person at the County Clerk’s Office. The deadline for requests is 3 PM on November 6.
