These 13 Kansas Restaurants Are Serving Freshwater Fish Worth Trying In 2026

Freshwater fish is one of those meals that exposes a kitchen fast. Too heavy and the fish disappears. Too bland and the plate never recovers. When it is cooked right, though, the whole table notices. That is why the best versions around Kansas deserve more attention. Good catfish, trout, walleye,...

A Quick Take on our new Quik Trip!

How many times per month do you visit the Waldo Quik Trip?? It’s my preferred pit spot to fill up the gas tank, and grab a snack. It took years for QT corporate to take over the former Burger King location and build a new, expanded store for our community that opened in June. I stopped in recently to talk with store manager Tyler Zoeller and learned some quick facts about our new Quik Trip!

Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. That chain, based in South Korea, now also has locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360

The Kansas Mexican Restaurant That Rolls Its Tortillas By Hand Every Morning

Your meal here starts with a warm flour tortilla, a blue bottle of squeeze margarine, and fresh salsa. No chips. No basket. Just a tortilla made that same day. I love how simple that sounds. This family brought its tortilla recipe from central Texas and has been rolling dough in Kansas since 1988.

Eating At Rozzelle Court Feels Like Lunching In An Italian Courtyard In Kansas City

Kansas City has plenty of lunch spots, but very few of them come with stone columns, a fountain in the middle of the room, and a glass roof overhead. One of them sits inside a famous art museum, and it looks more like a courtyard in Italy than a place to grab a sandwich.

This popular chicken chain opens soon in a Kansas City suburb

A massively popular Southern chicken chain is opening its doors in Raytown this week , taking over the space of a shuttered Applebee’s and bringing around 120 jobs to the area, according to a press release. Chick-fil-A opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at 9330 E. 350 Highway. Raytown’s first-ever Chick-fil-A will host a “moove-in” party on day one, offering guests who show up in cow-spotted clothing or accessories a free entrée or kid’s meal. The Star initially reported on the new Chick-fil-A location in May, when a spokesperson told the publication that they were eyeing a fall opening date. What was built in a demolished Applebee’s place is the 20th Chick-fil-A location in the Kansas City area, complete with seating for 90 guests, a dual drive-thru with a dedicated lane for mobile orders and an indoor playground. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chick-fil-A Raytown (@chickfila_raytown) The Raytown location of the Atlanta-based chain is owned and operated by Andrew Hartley, a press release said. His experience with Chick-fil-A dates back to 2010, when he was in college in Illinois and started working at a location there. He has lived in the Kansas City area for multiple years.

Where to hear live jazz in Kansas City, from 18th & Vine to Waldo

For nearly three decades, Kansas City native Chalis O’Neal has been playing trumpet, performing at jazz venues throughout the metro and contributing to the city’s longstanding musical tradition. From Vine Street Brewing Co. in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District to Stock Hill and Lonnie’s Reno Club, O’Neal has performed at establishments offering audiences different ways to experience Kansas City’s jazz scene. He also recommends the Blue Room and Ted’s Taproom, which he describes as a newer destination for live jazz, food and drinks. Although Kansas City has a number of established jazz clubs, O’Neal says the music extends well beyond traditional performance venues, with restaurants, breweries and neighborhood bars regularly featuring local musicians. “Kansas City has a great jazz scene,” O’Neal said. “I believe I heard there’s over 50 venues around town, not necessarily jazz clubs, but 50 venues that offer jazz.” Vine Street Brewing Co. On Wednesday evenings, the upstairs taproom at Vine Street Brewing Co. becomes a gathering place for some of Kansas City’s jazz musicians, who come together to improvise, exchange ideas and create music in real time. The weekly jam session, known as “Office Hours,” is led by Kansas City trombonist Marcus Lewis and

Drinking and eating (mostly) in Waldo, according to a Waldo bartender

The restaurant industry resume of Eric Jones is long and varied, as is the case for the many who staff Kansas City’s eateries and bars. His first hospitality job likely wasn’t on the books — working at the hotel that his dad managed when he was 14 years old — while his first paid job inside a restaurant was an Outback Steakhouse. Jones has worked at Chez Elle Crêperie, the now-closed Anton’s, the also gone Bier Station and several spots in between, picking up experience in the front of house and behind the bar. Where you’ll find him these days is at Dodson’s Bar & Commons, which he helped open with Eric Schmidt, and O’B’s, a Waldo restaurant and bar that opened in September, doing front-of-house operations. In that time, he’s also collected friends and mentors from the industry — like the late Waldo bar industry legend Jeff O’Brien, O’B’s namesake. “At the end of the day, what really matters most to me is that I love the team that we have here,” Jones said. That includes Schmidt, who also opened O’B’s with Mike’s Wine and Spirits owner Andy Doohan. The chef is Krista Harr, who Jones said worked with

A Kansas trip can involve a city pool, a university recreation facility, a lakeside cabin, and a campground with a much simpler bathroom. Fast-food chain has closed two Johnson County restaurants. More remain open

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. No national closings have been reported this month, but late last year, Arby’s quietly closed dozens of locations after sales dropped by more than 6%, according to reporting from TheStreet. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.
