Displaced residents of Leland House in Detroit to get $15K each

Former residents of the Leland House apartments in downtown Detroit are to each get $15,000 as part of a bankruptcy court settlement that a judge approved the week of Nov. 2. TROY — Construction is underway on two sound walls along Interstate 75 in Troy following years of complaints from nearby residents and businesses about excessive noise. One 2,666-foot wall is being built from Wattles to Long Lake. The other wall, which will be more than 2,000 feet longer at 4,273 feet, is going up from Crooks to Coolidge. Construction started in April of this year, said Rob Morosi, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, and will take roughly two years. It's expected to wrap up in the fall of 2027. The walls are the result of a $10 million earmark in the 2024 state budget sought by state Rep. Sharon MacDonell and Sen. Michael Webber. MacDonell said in a post on social media that she was glad to see construction underway while driving through Troy late last month. "Securing $10 million in state funding for this project in 2023 is one of my proudest accomplishments during my time as your state representative, and I’ll keep working hard to bring more resources to our community for projects like this one," she wrote in a post on Facebook. Detroit People Mover public corruption scandal nears convictions

A former Detroit official and a businessman accused of bribing him in exchange for more than $300,000 in phony contracts related to the Detroit People Mover are expected to plead guilty soon, according to federal court records. Detroiter Terrence Parker, 51, is accused of bribing Oak Park resident Michael Anderson, 55, the former strategic sourcing and procurement director of the Detroit Transportation Corp., during a conspiracy that ran from 2023-2025, according to court records. They are each charged with one count of federal program bribery — a 10-year felony — in a criminal information, a type of charge that indicates a guilty plea is expected soon. Parker is set to be arraigned Nov. 13 and Anderson is scheduled to plead guilty Nov. 18. Parker's lawyer, Larry Polk, and Anderson's lawyer, Stacey Studnicki, did not respond immediately to messages seeking comment. The developments are unfolding five months after the duo initially was charged in federal court in what marked a rare new bribery scandal within the ranks of a Detroit city government ravaged by corruption in the last 20 years.
