BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) – The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is offering $25 pet adoption fees from May 1-15. It’s made possible through the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Stephanie Salvago joined the CBS 42 Morning News on Saturday. She said Cathy Bissell with the foundation allows shelters like GBHS to offset adoption fees and discount them to clear the shelters.

“It allows that barrier to be broken down as far as adoptions go,” Salvago said. “People can come in and see that an adoptable pet is the best pet.”

She brought Penny on to the show and said an event like this helps to get pups like her a forever home. Salvago said this time of year with warmer weather they get an influx of puppies and kitties like Penny.

“She’s 3-years-old and this is all she wants is to be pet and loved on,” Salvago said. “Having a pet is such a wonderful experience – it shows responsibility, it shows love – it’s just the best thing in the entire world.”

GBHS is open Tuesday through Saturday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
