    Birmingham Zoo announces baby giraffe’s name

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — After receiving 8,200 votes, the Birmingham Zoo has announced the name of its baby giraffe.

    On April 17, a baby giraffe was born to parents Ruby and Jalil, expanding the zoo’s herd to five members.

    The zoo then opened up a poll for people to vote on the baby giraffe’s name . Options included Binti (meaning “daughter” in Swahili), Mopane (a native African tree giraffes consume), Zahara (meaning “flower” in Swahili) and Kabira (meaning “powerful” in Swahili).

    On Wednesday, Jalil revealed the baby’s name : Mopane. The name received nearly 3,000 votes, according to the zoo.

    Ruby and Mopane have access to the outside habitat Wednesday through Sunday each week from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and Jalil participates in giraffe feedings daily from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., for anyone who wants to see the giraffes.
