BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH)- Local union workers are planning an event to mourn for the dead and fight for the living.

The Broome-Tioga Central Labor Council, a division of the AFL-CIO, is hosting a Workers Memorial Day concert on Sunday April 28 at American Legion Post 1645.

The event features music by the Magpies and George Mann. In between there will be updates on various advocacy efforts on behalf of legislation to support workers’ rights.

Phil Shannahan is President of the Broome-Tioga Central Labor Council.

He says the AFL-CIO is working to improve job site conditions for union and non-union employees alike.

“The AFL-CIO designated April 28th as Workers Memorial Day. That is the anniversary of OSHA, when OSHA started in 1970. So, throughout the country, on that day or around that day, central labor councils around the country will hold different services or events pertaining to Workers Memorial Day,” said Shannahan.

The free event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. on April 28 at the American Legion on Robinson Street in Binghamton.

Donations will be collected for the Midstate Council for Occupational Safety and Health.

There will also be free food and refreshments.
