5 of 6 Oakland County school bonds pass, with varying support

Six Oakland County school districts had bond proposals totaling nearly $837 million on the Nov. 3 ballot. One of those bonds failed to make the grade with voters, while another passed by less than 60 votes. Here's what voters had to say in unofficial results: Birmingham A $240 million bond, the largest in Oakland County, passed in Birmingham, with 66% of voters saying yes to 34% no. The money will update safety and security measures, provide college and career readiness additions; buy new school buses; expand and upgrade the Midvale Early Childhood Center; and repair and replace aging infrastructure. Taxpayers will not see an increase from the 3.8 mills currently levied in the district. "I voted yes on the bond because our schools need better facilities," Carmen Johnson, 43 and a Birmingham mother of two, said. "It doesn't raise taxes and any chance to support public education you have to do." Farmington Voters in the Farmington Public School District approved a $171 million bond, with 62% yes to 38% no. The money will be used to support infrastructure at all 17 buildings in the district, as well as programming, enhancement of performing arts spaces at middle schools, athletic facilities at

Detroit People Mover public corruption scandal nears convictions

A former Detroit official and a businessman accused of bribing him in exchange for more than $300,000 in phony contracts related to the Detroit People Mover are expected to plead guilty soon, according to federal court records. Detroiter Terrence Parker, 51, is accused of bribing Oak Park resident Michael Anderson, 55, the former strategic sourcing and procurement director of the Detroit Transportation Corp., during a conspiracy that ran from 2023-2025, according to court records. They are each charged with one count of federal program bribery — a 10-year felony — in a criminal information, a type of charge that indicates a guilty plea is expected soon. Parker is set to be arraigned Nov. 13 and Anderson is scheduled to plead guilty Nov. 18. Parker's lawyer, Larry Polk, and Anderson's lawyer, Stacey Studnicki, did not respond immediately to messages seeking comment. The developments are unfolding five months after the duo initially was charged in federal court in what marked a rare new bribery scandal within the ranks of a Detroit city government ravaged by corruption in the last 20 years. Displaced residents of Leland House in Detroit to get $15K each
