Placer County Moves to Protect 525 Acres Near Auburn From 128 Future Homes

A 525-acre stretch of oak woodland and cattle ranchland northwest of Auburn could be protected from development forever under draft agreements the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted to approve on Tuesday. The property, known as Harvego Bear River Preserve Phase 2, sits near the Auburn Valley Country Club community and is currently zoned for about 128 homes. Instead, county officials and a local land trust want to keep it as grazing land and wildlife habitat.

Sacramento Mayor McCarty to outline priorities in annual State of the City address

Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty will outline his priorities for the city’s future during his second State of the City address Thursday morning at the Crocker Art Museum. The event could offer a preview of major city initiatives and priorities for the coming year. Unlike traditional State of the City addresses, the event will feature a question-and-answer session with a yet-to-be-announced interviewer. Potential topics include homelessness, economic development and a projected $40 million city budget deficit. Facing a $66.2 million budget shortfall in 2026, the city avoided widespread layoffs by eliminating vacant positions, raising fees and cutting homelessness spending. Many of the cuts produced ongoing savings, but the city must increase revenue or make additional cuts to balance future budgets. Addressing homelessness was a central promise of McCarty’s 2024 mayoral campaign. McCarty touts “significant process” in sheltering homeless people, pointing to the opening of 500 new beds in his first 15 months as mayor and a 19% reduction of people living unsheltered within city limits between 2024 and 2026. Early Elk Grove election results: Robles and Parks face off in 4th District

Elk Grove City Councilmember Sergio Robles led challenger Peggy Parks in early election night returns Tuesday as he sought a second term representing the city’s 4th District. As of 8:01 p.m., Robles had 65% of votes tallied, compared with 35% for Parks, according to unofficial Sacramento County election results . The initial results reflected ballots mailed before Election Day, with more votes left to be counted. Robles, 33, was first elected in 2022 and previously served on the city’s Planning Commission. A member of the California Army National Guard, he emphasized housing affordability, support for small businesses and programs helping first-time homebuyers. Parks, 58, a community volunteer, emphasized homelessness, traffic safety and improving city infrastructure. She also wanted to expand safety education about electric bicycles and hold regular office hours to hear from residents. Both candidates identified housing and community services as priorities , although they proposed different approaches to addressing the city’s needs. The 4th District covered much of southwestern Elk Grove, including neighborhoods south of Elk Grove Boulevard and west of Highway 99.
