BEVINGTON, Iowa (WHO) — A member of the first family of NASCAR racing was in central Iowa Monday, in the small town of Bevington, to talk about a special motorcycle ride.

The 28th Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America travels from South Dakota to North Carolina May 4th through the 10th. Riders will visit nine states and cover more than 2,100 miles on the week-long trek.

The ride raises money for Victory Junction, a camp for children with serious and chronic medical issues.

“In 2000 my oldest son Adam was killed in a racing accident. We started a camp called Victory Junction, which is children with chronic illnesses, life-threatening illnesses. We’ve seen 125,000 kids in the 20 years, this is the 20th anniversary of camp. So we’ve seen 125,000 kids who have come through camp or we’ve reached them through our hospital program. And it’s all totally free of charge. So we ride motorcycles, like we are today, here stopping at the Kum & Go here, we ride motorcycles so kids can go to camp,” said Petty.

Other celebrity riders include Kyle’s dad Richard Petty and former NASCAR drivers David Ragan, Ken Schrader, and Kenny Wallace.
