DES Timeline This is a timeline of events involving the Galey and Lord textile plant as compiled by the S.C. Department of Environmental Services, formerly a division of the now defunct Department of Health and Environmental Control. The Galey and Lord factory is a federal Superfund site and source of contaminated sludge that was spread on farmland in eastern South Carolina. The State newspaper edited the timeline for brevity and clarity. Pre 2016 : Galey and Lord is involved in cleanup activities at the plant site. The pollutant of concern is trichloroethylene, a solvent that can degrade the health of people who are exposed. 2016: Galey and Lord shuts down. 2017: A cleanup contract at the Galey and Lord plant is canceled because of the company’s failure to complete the work. State regulators find tanks, drums and other containers filled with chemicals at the plant. DHEC seeks the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s help investigating the site. 2018: Regulators discover forever chemicals at the plant. Testing was then done in the Great Pee Dee River, private wells and some sludge fields. 2019: The EPA begins cleaning up the most serious contamination at the site. The cleanup lasts 10 months. Nine states and the District of Columbia lost jobs in the year ending in September, according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hit hard by the Trump administration’s cuts to the federal workforce, the District of Columbia suffered the largest percentage job loss, down 3.5% or 25,800 jobs. Montana, which lost jobs for the first time since 2020, shed 1% of its total workforce, or 5,300 jobs. Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia all experienced declines of less than 1%.
