On Wednesday, they held a press conference about the settlement, along with Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe and the family's attorneys, John Burris and Ben Nisenbaum.

Quinto's family has been instrumental in bringing police reform to Antioch, but on Wednesday they called for even more change, including separating county coroner's offices from the umbrella of the sheriff's department.

The civil rights suit was filed over the death of Quinto, a 30-year-old Navy veteran who was experiencing a mental health crisis when Antioch officers restrained him and placed a knee on his neck for nearly five minutes on Dec. 23, 2020.

During a press conference held at the family's Antioch home on Wednesday, Quinto's stepfather Robert Collins expressed gratitude that the city listened to their concerns over the years, resulting in changes made to prevent other in-custody deaths there.

A group of pro-Palestinian protesters on Wednesday occupied an abandoned building on the UC Berkeley campus in hopes of bringing attention to what they describe as a genocide in Gaza, according to organizers.

The group took over an abandoned building in UC Berkeley's Anna Head complex near People's Park in Berkeley's Southside neighborhood, two blocks from campus. The building was boarded up following a fire in 2022.

Some protesters entered the former Institute for the Study of Societal Issues building through square holes in the surrounding fencing to occupy it, while most protesters occupied the grassy area outside of the fence. Protesters inside of the fence erected banners and spray-painted slogans on the building in red paint.

The building's occupation Wednesday sparked a response from both police and UC Berkeley, who released a WarnMe notification at 7:06 p.m. stating that several dozen people with sticks, pry bars, and bolt cutters broke into the building and broke windows, cut fences, and spray-painted walls.

Police asked people to avoid the area all afternoon and into the evening, though there have been no reports of any arrests as of 9 p.m.

A man who was driving drunk when he struck and killed a Yountville man in 2020 has been convicted of second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the Napa County District Attorney's Office.

Mauricio Ramirez Aguilar, 40, was driving a pickup truck southbound on state Highway 29 at a high rate of speed on Oct. 17, 2020 when he collided with a Nissan Pathfinder containing Constantine Tsavalas, 87, killing him.

An investigation showed that Aguilar had been driving with a blood alcohol content of .204 percent, almost three times the legal limit. He was also driving about 86 mph or more at the time of the crash.

He was found guilty by a jury after a 12-day trial. Aguilar has two prior DUI convictions, both of which involved collisions as well, according to prosecutors.

Aguilar is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12.

Four falcons that recently hatched at UC Berkeley's Campanile bell tower now need names.

The Cal Falcons group of scientists and volunteers that monitors the peregrine falcon nest atop the tower and shares footage of them is going to social media to encourage name submissions for the chicks.

The four new falcons -- two females and two males -- are in the nest of Annie, a female falcon that has lived in a nest atop the tower since 2016, and her new partner Archie. Annie has now had 22 chicks there and the names of the birds in prior years' contests usually tie somehow to UC Berkeley.

This year, organizers of the contest said the names of the four chicks should be connected by a theme. Nominations will be accepted until noon Sunday via Cal Falcons' profiles on Instagram, Facebook and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Berkeley Public Library has also set up a way to allow youth to propose names.

The top suggested names will be announced on social media at noon Monday and the winning names will be revealed later next week.

A gas station in an unincorporated area of Redwood City was robbed earlier this week, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

At about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to the Arco gas station in the 1800 block of Woodside Road on a report of an armed robbery that had occurred in the street. According to investigators, two people were standing outside of the gas station when they were approached by two suspects and robbed of their personal belongings. Two suspects were arrested after a yearlong investigation into a fatal park shooting in Tracy last year, police said.

Juan Santos, 24, was arrested in Tracy and Adrian Darbison, 18, was detained in Manteca on suspicion of killing Khyrei Currie on April 21, 2023 at McDonald Park, police announced Tuesday. Several agencies served search and arrest warrants Tuesday to residents in the 2900 block of North MacArthur Drive, 1500 block of Sephos Street in Manteca, the 1900 block of Darrah Street in Ceres, and the 1000 block of West Ninth Street in Tracy.

The day Currie was killed, the Tracy Police Department received reports about shots fired at 9:31 p.m. in the area of North Central Avenue and First Street. Currie, 23, of Tracy, was found in the 100 block of East First Street. He was treated at the scene for his injuries and taken to a hospital, where he died during medical treatment, police said.

Investigators alleged that patrol officers had found evidence related to the shooting in the area of a local park located in the 100 block of Central Avenue.
