PREP SOFTBALL: Autumn Meris delivers for Beloit Turner against Jefferson

    By DAILY NEWS STAFF,

BELOIT — Autumn Meris singled in the walk-off run in the eighth inning as Beloit Turner edged visiting Jefferson 2-1 in Rock Valley softball on Friday.

The Trojans (9-6, 8-5 RVC) took advantage of a two-out error followed by Kamryn Clark’s single to load the bases for Meris, who hit a line-shot single to center field on a 1-2 pitch to end it.

Lily Fairfield tripled to right field to open the Jefferson seventh and broke a scoreless tie by scoring on a wild pitch.

Meris singled to open the Turner seventh and scored on Maddyn Saunders’ ground out to force extra innings.

Jefferson (16-6, 11-3 in conference) recorded 11 hits, including two apiece by Fairfield, Bre Mengel and Aeryn Messmann, against a trio of Turner pitchers but stranded runners in scoring position throughout. Saunders started on the pitcher’s rubber for Turner and went three innings, allowing four hits and no runs with one strikeout. Jayden Pozzani followed and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing four hits. Lauryn Wells finished, going the final three innings and allowing three hits and one run, but picked up the win.

Hildie Dempsey went the distance for the Eagles, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.

    • UNION GROVE 7-11, BELOIT MEMORIAL 0-4: The Broncos swept a pair of games from the Purple Knights on Friday.

Marlee Lange shut out Beloit in the opener on five hits, striking out nine. She got plenty of offensive support, particularly from Natalie Schultz, who drove in four runs on two hits, including a homer in the sixth inning. She scored three times.

Beloit’s hits were a double by Rilynne Cleland and singles by Jasmine Smith, Allie Gustafson, Brooklynne Hereford-Foster and Trinity Winfield. Delayna Hyser took the loss, working all seven innings and allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned). She walked one and fanned three.

Union Grove led only 5-4 when it put up five runs in the fifth inning to take charge of the second game. Gustafson had a big game for the Knights, going 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Cleland took the loss, going six innings and allowing 15 hits and 11 runs (seven earned). She walked one and struck out one.

    • BRODHEAD 16, EVANSVILLE 0: Ava Risum led a 15-hit attack in just four innings, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs. She also picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle and didn’t allow a hit or a walk, striking out seven.

Sophia Leitzen also had three hits for the Cardinals and Jerrica Schwartz, Allie Dahl, Leah Rear and Tatum Ceslok also collected multiple hits.

    • ROCKRIDGE INVITATIONAL: Hononegah went 3-1 in the tournament Friday and Saturday hosted by Rockridge High School.

The Indians (23-2) split on Friday, with a walkoff home run by Zoey Calhoun lifting them to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Dakota before they fell to Dakota 10-9. The loss ended a 22-game winning streak for Hononegah.

Against Dakota, the Indians trailed 2-0 when Addison Hulburt launched a two-run, game-tying homer to center in the fifth inning. Facing a time limit, Calhoun took care of business by blasting her homer to right to end the game in the next inning.

Reliever Irelyn O’Brien picked up the win, working 3 1-3 innings and allowing only one hit and not runs. She walked one and struck out four. Aislynn Palmer started and went 2 2-3 innings, allowing two hits and two runs with one walk and eight strikeouts.

The Indians had a horrendous first inning against Moline, allowing 10 runs. They nearly came all the way back, scoring six times in the second and four more in the fifth before a time limit ended the contest.

Hulburt collected another homer as well as a double, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Calhoun and Natalie Kinney also collected two hits.

Saturday, Hononegah won a 2-0 pitchers’ duel with Orion and then pummeled Seneca 15-7.

Mackenzie Haas started for the Indians and surrendered only one hit and no runs over four innings, striking out three. Emma Tapia pitched two shutout innings for the Indians, allowing no hits with four strikeouts.

Palmer bashed a two-run homer in the sixth to give the Indians all their offense.

The bats came to life in the finale with Seneca. The Indians collected 17 hits, including homers by Danielle Franz, Kinney, Haas and Calhoun. Palmer was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and two RBIs. Haas and Kaelyn Kelly both had three RBIs.

O’Brien went the first four innings, allowing five hits and four runs (one earned) with five strikeouts. Sam Nosbisch pitched one inning and allowed three runs.

    • NORTH BOONE 6-4, ROCKFORD AUBURN 11: The Vikings split a doubleheader with Auburn, with Cami Carter earning the win in the opener. She allowed only two hits and zero runs in the complete-game effort, walking one and striking out nine.

Lauren Stefek, Danielle Goodman and Avarie Torres each had two hits for the Vikings in the win.
