Weekly Safety Report: Marshall, Michigan - Home Fire and Four-Wheeler Theft
Marshall, Michigan experienced two incidents this week. The first incident involved a home in Marshall being damaged by a fire that broke out in a fireplace. Firefighters quickly responded and brought the fire under control. The second incident involved the theft of a Green Yamaha Kodiak 700 four-wheeler from a cornfield in Girard Township. Michigan State Police are investigating the theft and seeking information from the public.
Former Michigan labor leader pleads guilty to aggravated assault
A former high-ranking labor official in Michigan pled guilty Friday, Dec. 1 after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a 2022 political fundraiser. Jonathan Byrd, 40 of Battle Creek, entered a guilty plea for one count of aggravated assault with an agreement that asks the judge to sentence him to 90 days in prison, a news release from the Michigan Attorney General said. Byrd had previously been prominent in Michigan politics and lobbying on behalf of the Michigan Laborer’s District Council of the Laborer’s International Union of North America (LiUNA).

Springfield receives state funds to support Avenue A resurfacing
A Springfield street improvement project is one of 11 transportation proposals to receive a portion of $4 million in state funding. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced this week that Springfield will receive $375,000 in Category F transportation and economic development funding to resurface Avenue A between Helmer Road (M-37) and Dickman Road (M-89). Springfield will contribute $154,000 toward the project.

A Peek Inside the Old Battle Creek Sanitarium: 1876-1940
(The story of the sanitarium is an extensive one...this is just a nutshell version for an easier read.) For $11,000, a farm was purchased in Battle Creek on which the Western Health Reform Institute was developed – and opened on September 5, 1866. The staff and patients included “two doctors, two bath attendants, one nurse (untrained), three or four helpers, and one patient.” The institute had accommodations for 12 patients which soon filled to capacity. Seeing that more room and more staff was needed, an urgent plea was sent: “hustle young men off to some doctor mill, and get ready. Our institute buildings are already larger than our doctors.” One of those young men happened to be John H. Kellogg.

Thanks to a huge second half and another 30-point game from junior guard Kam Brackett it was the Vikings taking Friday’s non-conference tilt by the score of 53-47. “It helps when you hit a couple shots but overall, we wanted to focus on our defense tonight,” Bronson coach Damien Loveless said. “We had a couple of big turnovers early, but we told the guys to just focus on our defense, which we did, especially in the second half there where we switched back-and-forth between our three different defenses to give Pennfield different looks. I think that gave us some advantages on a few key possessions and we were able to hit some big shots late to get this win.”
