BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – While many people will be placing smaller flags on fallen soldier’s graves on Memorial Day, one local cemetery will be hoisting a much larger one.

Beckley’s American Legion Post 32 Veteran’s Cemetery is getting a brand-new flag for Memorial Day. This new flag comes straight from Senator Joe Manchin’s office.

The Raleigh County Veteran’s Museum is inviting the community to come and witness this flag raising at 8 a.m. on Memorial Day. The Shady Springs Middle School choir will also be providing the music for this event.

Raleigh County Veteran’s Museum President, Ron Hedrick said, “Not every town has a Veteran’s Cemetery, so we’re honored to have that and there is still plenty of room here for veterans to be buried here. So, we want it to grow, but we also want to maintain it and take care of it for years to come.”

One of the newest features here at the Beckley American Legion Post 32 Veteran’s Cemetery is this Argon Cross that will be constructed around the new flag. This cross will be made to resemble, in size, the famous Argon Cross that resides in Arlington’s cemetery.

“Our hope is that we’ll be able to sell memorial bricks to fill that cross in, so that it’ll be a memorial laying on the ground as a cross, you know supporting the new flagpole, and it’ll help raise funds for the cemetery,” said Hedrick.

Hedrick also told 59News that anyone can make your donations by June 30, 2024 to help them fully fund the veteran’s cemetery.
