BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Lung cancer was recognized across the nation the week of May 6, 2024. Lung Cancer Action Week is a time to support and acknowledge the fight against lung cancer

The American Cancer Society says that there are over 200,000 new lung cancer cases in 2024 alone. Preventative scans are available to those who are at risk for lung cancer.

Lhea Mollette, Director of Ancillary Services at Beckley ARH, said early detection helps to avoid problems that could be worse down the road.

“[These services help provide] the ability to look at the tissues in the lungs [in a more detailed way], to be able to see maybe smaller nodules that you wouldn’t see on a routine chest x-ray. Then, when we can have the early detection with the smaller nodules, that gives us a better outcome when being able to treat and even cure lung cancers,” said Mollette to 59News.

Mollette said those who have a history of smoking need to get a scan. She said smoking and asbestos are the most common risk factors when it comes to lung cancer.
