More Minnesotans deserve an affordable American Dream
Minnesota thrives when everyone has a stable home in a community that welcomes them. Our state is experiencing a housing shortage, and it is impacting our families. As elected officials, we hear about the impact the housing shortage has on neighbors every day — whether it’s an unsustainable rent increase, or young people who can’t move back to Coon Rapids to find a home near their families, or seniors who can’t afford to downsize into an accessible home.

Report: Housing production slips, pushing home prices and rents
The Twin Cities didn't build nearly enough housing units last year to keep up with demand, an ongoing trend that's contributing to rising rents and home prices . By the numbers: Metro builders produced 12,161 units in 2025, according to a report out Friday morning from the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank. That's well below a goal of 18,000 units per year set by the Itasca Project as a key metric for maintaining housing affordability in the metro area. Catch up quick: A construction boom helped the Twin Cities surpass the 18,000 threshold each year from 2019-2022, but production has fallen short the last three years. Why it matters: The Minneapolis Fed says this, along with lagging production of income-restricted housing, risks eroding the Twin Cities' standing as a relatively affordable metro for housing. The Fed says the Twin Cities has a lower rental vacancy rate than most of its peer cities, and there are signs that rents are outpacing income growth here. The big picture: Developers say a mix of high construction costs and interest rates, coupled with slow rent growth in recent years, has made building apartments difficult financially , though single-family production has fared better.
