Local parades, ceremonies to honor Memorial Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Memorial Day is coming up on Monday, May 27.
In honor of those who gave their lives in service to our country, several local parades and ceremonies have been scheduled for the weekend.

Beaufort
A Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday in Beaufort beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will begin on Boundary Street and take the traditional route through downtown, ending at the Beaufort National Cemetery.
At noon, the Beaufort National Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day ceremony under the main flagpole. If you are driving, you’re asked to use the entrances on Rogers or Lafayette streets.
In case of rain, the parade will be canceled. The ceremony will be moved indoors to Beaufort High School at noon.
Bloomingdale
A Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at Veterans Freedom Park (1 W. Hwy. 80).
In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to city hall.
Hilton Head Island
The town’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. at Veterans’ Memorial at Shelter Cove Community Park (59 Shelter Cove Ln.).
The ceremony will feature several guest speakers, including Hilton Head Island Mayor Alan Perry; Colonel Christopher McArthur, USMC Commanding Officer, RTR; and Lieutenant Karl V. Heitman, CHC, U.S. Navy.
This ceremony also includes a call to the colors, a proclamation presentation and music by the Hilton Head Choral Society.
Pooler
The Veterans Council of Chatham County will host a Wreath Laying Ceremony in the Memorial Garden at the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force (175 Bourne Ave.) at 11 a.m. on Monday.
On Tuesday, the council will clean up Flags for the Fallen at the museum.
Richmond Hill
Fort McAllister (3894 Fort McAllister Road) will host a Memorial Day Commemoration on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Living history interpretations will take place throughout the day, including musket and cannon firings and a flag ceremony.
Guests can tour the fort, museum and grounds of Fort McAllister along the banks of the Ogeechee River.
The cost to enter is $5.50 to $9.75 per person.
Ridgeland
Operation Patriots FOB, a veterans organization, will host their Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 25. It will be held at their property at 328 Lakeview Drive.
Maj. Gen. James Livingston is the keynote speaker.
This ceremony will also mark the end of the Light the Fire event. The organization has been keeping a fire burning for 22 days to honor the 22 veterans or military members who commit suicide every day.
More than 150 people are expected at the ceremony.
Savannah
The Veterans Council of Chatham County will host several Memorial Day services in Savannah.

Vietnam Veterans at 6 p.m. at Emmitt Park, 4089 East Bay Street, SAV GA
Monday, May 27:
Laurel Grove Cemetery at 10 a.m. located at 2101 Kollock Street SAV GA
Poppy Launch at 11 a.m. at Fort Pulaski located at 101 Ft. Pulaski Rd SAV
VFW 660 Memorial Day Ceremony at 2 p.m. 5115 Ogeechee Rd, SAV GA
VFW 660 FLAG Retirement 4 p.m. located at 5115 Ogeechee Rd. SAV GA
Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Hosted by American Legion Post 500, Laurel Grove South Cemetery located at 2101 Kollock Street SAV GA
Thunderbolt
The Veterans Council of Chatham County will host a Bonaventure Cemetery Cleanup at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 25.
