CLEVELAND — Every winter, Northeast Ohio’s snowbelts stand out for some of the heaviest snowfall totals in the state. When cold air moves across the relatively warm waters of Lake Erie, it can produce huge amounts of lake-effect snow. Some communities pick up several extra feet of snow each winter simply because of where they sit. Lake-effect influence can be broken into three tiers, known as the primary, secondary, and tertiary snowbelts.

Short-range models are coming in colder for Friday night into Saturday morning, especially along the Lake Erie snowbelt. Heavy lake-effect bands could bring a wintry mix of rain, snowflakes, graupel, and possibly sleet. Waterspouts are also possible over Lake Erie.
