Based on customer service requests, the Clark County Public Works Department installed new stop signs at the intersection of Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street on Thursday, April 18.

The traffic revision created an all-way stop sign-controlled intersection, where previously Northeast 239th Street traffic stopped for north and southbound travelers on Northeast 72nd Avenue. The Public Works Department stated in a press release, the change will improve safety and mobility at the intersection.

The release added that drivers may notice an increased police presence in the area in the coming weeks as law enforcement will be assisting with safe operation and traffic control as the weather-dependent project continued.

“Requiring all vehicles to stop at this intersection will help reduce the risk of collisions and crash severity,” according to the county’s website. “This project will also help facilitate mobility by reducing delays at the Northeast 239th Street approaches.”

This project adds stop signs, advance warning signs and pavement markings to all approaches on Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street, the website added.

The county stated online that the new traffic revision is an interim solution. County staff believe installing a traffic signal or roundabout will be necessary once traffic levels increase to a specific threshold at the intersection.

The decision to change this intersection to an all-way stop-controlled intersection was based on an engineering study that evaluated crash history, traffic volume, delay times and sight distance, the website stated.

Using the guidance found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and an engineering study data, county staff determined that an all-way stop was warranted.
