Maddie Simonds of Lakeview is Enquirer Athlete of the Week winner for May 6-11

BATTLE CREEK - The fans have spoken.

The winner of the latest Enquirer Athlete of the Week fan poll is Maddie Simonds of the Lakeview girls tennis team.

Fans got behind Simonds to help her edge finalists Lilamae Frank, Sarah Metzger and Tyler Wolfersberger. Simonds received 74 percent of the vote by the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline. Thanks to her fans, she will receive an Enquirer Athlete of the Week T-shirt.

Simonds, a freshman, helped Lakeview win the annual All-City girls tennis tournament for the 17th straight time. Simonds took first at No. 1 singles as the Spartans won seven of eight flights in the event. Simonds was 22-3 on the season heading into regionals, with first-place finishes at the Allegan Invitational and the Lakeview Invitational, along with taking second at the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference tourney.

"She has been a great addition for us as a freshman. She is a great kid and has really done well this year," Lakeview girls tennis coach Jeff VanDis said. "Taking No. 1 singles, and saying you are best in the city, says a lot. There are so many great players who have won the city title over the years, so for her to win as a freshman, is great."
