Agencies to participate in ‘active shooter drill’ Wednesday in John Day
JOHN DAY – The Blue Mountain Hospital District, along with other agencies including BLM Law Enforcement, Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Forestry will be taking part in an active shooter drill tomorrow morning in John Day. BMHD’s EMS Lead, Makaela Hughet, said not to be alarmed once the drill begins. Hughet was recently on KJDY’s Coffee Time and explained the drill:
Sumpter gets federal grants to replace water supply line, storage tank
The city of Sumpter has received a $1.365 million federal grant to replace its main water supply line and to install water meters for each connection. The grant, which the city of 210 will not have to repay, is the second Sumpter has received in the past couple years, Mayor Linda Wise said.
Bailey McCracken receives Prairie City Fiber Fest Scholarship
PRAIRIE CITY – (Release from Prairie City Fiber Fest, Inc.) Prairie City Fiber Fest, Inc is pleased to announce Bailey McCracken as this year’s scholarship recipient. Ms. McCracken is a graduating senior from Grant Union High School who has been active in 4H and FFA for many years, most recently as the Grant Union FFA Chapter President. She plans on using the scholarship to pursue a degree in Animal Science and Nutrition, starting at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. In the future she hopes to become a beef nutritionist to support beef production. “Throughout FFA, I have been the president which needs people skills and critical thinking to get through problems that come up with planning our events. This scholarship will help me achieve my goals by allowing me to focus on my education.”
Prescribed burning to begin in UpRatt5G

This unit is located on the west side of Perry Meadow. The 0400 road id the western border. The 0400 road connects to the 2850 and 2815 roads.
One arrested Thursday on Grant County warrant
JOHN DAY – On Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:50 p.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a business on West Main in John Day to serve an arrest warrant. Erik Mountain, a 46-year-old male, was arrested on the Grant County warrant. Nothing further was released. We’ll provide updates as more information comes in.
Two dogs rescued in mountains available for adoption or foster care
Two of the five dogs abandoned in the mountains south of Sumpter in late April are still available for adoption or for temporary foster care. Dick Haines, of New Hope for Eastern Oregon Animals, said two of the other three dogs that were rescued in early May have been adopted. The third dog will participate in the Powder Pals program that Haines coordinates at Powder River Correctional Facility. Inmates at the prison help train dogs to make the animals for suitable for adoption.

A prescribed fire on private land near Phillips Reservoir burned about 2 acres on Saturday afternoon, May 11. The fire was contained as of 6:20 p.m., said Buzz Harper, chief of the Keating Rural Fire Protection District.
