BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Pickleball fans in Barrington will soon have brand new courts to play on.

The Barrington Town Council unanimously approved a $249,750 bid to pay for a renovated tennis court, basketball court, and four pickleball courts at Chianese Field.

Barrington Town Manager Phil Hervey said the current courts are in need of repair and the town is excited about creating the first dedicated pickleball courts.

Right now, the Kent Street and Middle School courts are used for both tennis and pickleball.

“I can guarantee they will be very popular. All of the other pickleball courts in Barrington are shared facilities where temporary nets are set up on tennis courts that also have pickleball striping,” Hervey told 12 News.

Hervey said a grant from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will pay for $80,000 of the project and the remainder will be covered by the town’s American Rescue Plan Act funding.
