SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — A Ballinger High School student has earned a $2,500 scholarship to attend Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s 2024 National Leadership Conference.

The student, Eva Burrell, was one of the over 140 students nationwide who applied for a Travel and Attendance Access Scholarship. Only 17 recipients were selected to receive the scholarship. Burrell was also the only student from Texas to receive the scholarship during the 2024 awarding window, according to Ballinger High School FCCLA adviser Kinsley Lester.

The scholarship was established in 2022 as a way to “provide life-changing opportunities for student members and their chapter advisers to attend NLC,” according to FCCLA. Scholarship recipients are chosen by FCCLA’s Inclusion, Access, Equity, and Diversity Committee based on several criteria, including “financial need, academic merit, community engagement and school/FCCLA involvement,” as per the FCCLA website .

“This is an exciting opportunity,” Burrell said.

This year’s National Leadership Conference will be held in Seattle, Washington, from June 29 to July 3. There, FCCLA students can ” network with members and advisers from across the nation, attend leadership workshops, participate in Competitive Events, explore career pathways, and learn from industry experts,” according to FCCLA .

“Eva’s selection for this prestigious award is a testament to their outstanding achievements and potential, and FCCLA is honored to have such a talented and dedicated member represent the organization at NLC this summer,” FCCLA said. “FCCLA congratulates Eva Burrell on this achievement and looks forward to watching them thrive in the future.”
