AYDEN, N.C. (WNCT) — Tobacco season is on the way. Once again, farmers are preparing their tobacco crops and hoping for a good season.

Around mid-April, they’ll begin setting tiny tobacco plants out. From then on, weather will play a big part in how well the crop does throughout the summer.

Right now farmers are keeping a close eye on it in their greenhouses.

“Well, our next step is we’re gonna continue clipping plants as they grow every other day. We try to stay on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday rotation on clipping plants. And keeping them, the fertility up, keeping them sprayed, keeping disease out of the house,” said farm manager Jordan Tyson, of L. Tyson and Sons, Inc.

They are hopeful for this year since the weather has been fair so far. Tyson said that the plants look really good. They’re running heaters at night to keep the plants warm and opening the curtains slightly during the day. This helps regulate the temperature inside the greenhouse.
